Keeping Teen Smiles Healthy
This message from Boulder County Smiles in Lafayette is for the parents of teenagers. As most know all too well, many young people make some make questionable health choices as they progress toward independence. We encourage parents to be vigilant about twice-yearly dental exams and cleanings for their teens.
Adolescent Dental Health Risks
The most common dental health issues for teenagers include:
- Wisdom teeth. Most people get their wisdom teeth during their late teens or early twenties, and for most, they can be problematic. Wisdom teeth can grow in crooked or not at all. Due to their position in the back of the mouth they are also harder to keep clean, and thus more prone to decay. Extracting wisdom teeth is a common procedure.
- Braces. Teeth that are out of alignment affect biting and chewing. They also tend to be more prone to decay because they are harder to keep clean by ordinary brushing. There are more options for straightening teeth than ever.
- Mouth jewelry. Oral piercing are increasingly common, especially in younger people. They can pose serious threats to health, because of the millions of bacteria in the mouth. Infection is a definite risk; in some cases it can lead to serious complications like hepatitis and other systemic infections.
