What is Botox®?
The word “Botox” is short for Botulinum Toxin. Botox injections work by reducing the strain on certain muscles or nerves, allowing them to relax. This can improve the aesthetic appearance of your face, but it can also alleviate symptoms of TMJ and migraines. Botulinum treatment works because it blocks signals sent from nerves that may be causing certain muscles to contract. Botox can relax those muscles that may be creating wrinkles or causing other issues, such as headaches or migraines. Botox has received FDA approval for treating chronic migraines.
How does Botox® Treatment work?
Botox treatment is a minimally invasive procedure. During the Botox procedure, your doctor will very precisely place a series of small injections into your skin and muscles to best suite your specific needs. The doctor may use a topical anesthesia to numb the area before the injection is placed. Most patients do not feel any discomfort during their Botox treatment. The Botox procedure is quick and easy, and your Botox injections will typically begin to take effect within 24-72 hrs of your visit.
Botox® for TMJ Disorder and Migraines
Botox was at one time viewed as mainly a cosmetic procedure due to its ability to smooth out wrinkles in the face. However, because of its ability to relax muscles and relieve tension, the treatment is now widely accepted for use in treating TMJ disorders as well as chronic migraines. Botox injections can help relax the muscles in your jaw and improve the range of motion of your mouth. Most patients find this to greatly reduce if not completely eliminate pain and other side effects of their TMJ disorder. Botox can also block neurotransmitters that transport pain signals to your brain, helping patients find relief for headaches and severe migrains.
