Treat Your Smile To A Healthy Diet

experienced family dentist Lafayette

Proper nutrition can benefit you in a number of ways; increased energy, improved immunity, glowing skin, mental clarity, and a lower risk of heart disease and stroke. How often, however, do you look at how your diet influences your oral health?

Your diet can impact your risk of cavities, enamel health, and gum condition. Healthy foods provide an environment that can prevent inflammation and infection. Vegetables, fruits, legumes, and nuts are the ideal choices for oral health. Calcium-fortified beverages, milk and other dairy products provide vitamins, minerals, and calcium that aids in keeping teeth, bones, and gums healthy. Eating crispy fruits and vegetables, such as apples and celery, will help clean your teeth and gums.

A healthy diet contains all the important vitamins and minerals, and the most important mineral for teeth is fluoride – especially for youth. Between the ages of 6 months and 16 years old, both the primary and the permanent teeth come in, therefore adequate fluoride is critical.

Don’t forget, however, that too much fluoride is detrimental. Dr. Gordon West can counsel you on the exact dosage of fluoride for your child, taking into account whether your municipal water is fluoridated.

Even though adults’ teeth have already formed, fluoride assists in remineralizing weakened enamel to a degree. This strong mineral is applied to teeth during extensive dental cleanings at Gordon West DDS, Cosmetic & General Dentistry and daily with fluoride toothpaste.

Bacteria that causes enamel-destroying plaque love a steady diet of sugar – from soda, candy, and even fruit juices. When enamel wears away, the teeth become vulnerable to decay, cracks, and discoloration.

Sugary foods that are especially detrimental are those that get trapped in the spaces between teeth and the tiny pits and cracks in the molars. Candies that are chewy or hard can lodge in these spaces and allow for the adverse sugar to have direct contact with enamel until brushing occurs. Sticky candy can also damage braces and retainers. More than one retainer has fallen prey to sticky caramel or hard taffy.

Be sure to brush after each meal and before bed. In addition, remember to floss or use a water irrigating method to dislodge food particles trapped in spaces. By eating well, brushing properly, flossing regularly, and avoiding foods that stick to your teeth, you can have a beautiful smile for life. (And, hopefully, the physical stamina to complement that beautiful smile and the energy to enjoy both.)

I’m Dr. Gordon West, and I have a full-service dental practice in Lafayette. Helping my dental patients stay healthy is important to me, and so is helping them achieve the smile they want through cosmetic dentistry services such as veneers, teeth whitening and smile redesigns.

Boulder Looks For Red Carpet-Caliber Smiles

When you see pics of your favorite stars, do you ever wonder how these men and women can project such perfection? Can ordinary Boulder folks ever achieve anything approaching celebrity-caliber attractiveness? When it comes to stunning smiles, the answer is a resounding “Yes!” There many effective cosmetic dentistry procedures available to Lafayette, and Boulder County folks that can produce dramatic results. Complete smile makeovers combine various procedures to transform your smile. These are the same procedures used by cosmetic dentists that serve the Hollywood A list.

A common and fairly inexpensive procedure is teeth whitening. There are a variety of ways this can be done. Many Boulder area drugstores sell over-the-counter whitening strips and gels. Your cosmetic dental practice can recommend an effective one, or they may offer in-office bleaching. This is the quickest way to whiten your teeth, sometimes in less than an hour.

If you suffer from missing teeth, most cosmetic dentists will recommend dental implants. A dental implant is placed directly in the jaw bone. This provides strength, natural appearance and function, and comfort. It can also prevent bone recession that is common with a missing tooth.

Veneers, which are custom-made for each patient, are designed to cover the front of the teeth. These are useful for Lafayette patients who have broken or chipped teeth, stained teeth, or gaps between teeth.

Bonding, enamel shaping, gum contouring, and braces are other important procedures that can be employed by your Lafayette cosmetic dentist to help your teeth look their best.

Are You At Risk For Bone Recession?

dental bone grafting Lafayette

Beautiful smiles require healthy teeth, healthy gums, and healthy bone. Occasionally, a patient experiences bone recession in their jaw which can cause tooth loss and other problems. However, it is commonly the other way around. The bone loss occurs as a result of a lost tooth because the blood supply and stimulus necessary for maintaining healthy bone is taken away. Bone recession can be caused by a number of factors. Let’s look at the most common causes of jaw bone loss:

Gum Infection
A gum infection can result when gum inflammation goes untreated and progresses to periodontitis. With periodontitis, the gums pull away from the teeth creating pockets which provide the perfect breeding ground for the detrimental infection. Gum infections can advance undetected, though there are usually warning signs. Swollen, painful gums, loose teeth, and gums that bleed when brushed are symptoms of periodontitis. The infection dissolves bone as the gums pull away from the tooth. Inadequate oral hygiene increase the risk of gum disease but other factors can compromise gum health. These include smoking (no surprise there), hormone levels, diseases that lower immune system effectiveness, medications that cause dry mouth, and genetic predisposition.

Abscessed Tooth
An abscess is a pus-filled pocket of infection that occurs in the nerve and roots of a tooth. As the infection attacks the tooth and bone tissue it creates a space that fills with pus. There are several treatments for a tooth abscess including antibiotics to kill the infection, a root canal, or extraction, if needed.

Extracted Teeth
Bone is living tissue and needs stimulation to stay healthy and retain its size and density. Biting, chewing, talking and all the other normal mouth functions keep the portion of the bone surrounding the tooth root healthy. When a tooth is extracted, the bone that used to anchor the tooth root recedes as if it understands that it is no longer needed. A dental implant provides stimulation similar to the natural tooth and can prevent bone recession.

If you would like to replace a missing tooth with an implant, but don’t have enough bone at the implant site, you might be a candidate for bone grafting. Bone grafting may sound like major oral surgery but it is really a routine procedure performed in a dental office.

I am Dr. Gordon West of Gordon West DDS, Cosmetic & General Dentistry in Lafayette. If you have experienced bone recession due to gum disease, an abscess, an extracted tooth, or any other reason, let’s explain your options. You may benefit from a dental implant, soft tissue grafts, or bone grafts. Dental implants can significantly improve your quality of life and prohibit further recession. Call 720-862-3630 to make an appointment for an informative exam and consult.

I pride myself in the personal attention and quality dental care I provide to each of my patients. I understand that visiting a dentist can cause anxiety for some people. I promise you that you will feel comfortable in my care and leave the appointment with accurate information and an individualized treatment plan.

Can You Handle A Dental Emergency?

Louisville after hours dental

At Gordon West DDS, Cosmetic & General Dentistry, we hope you never experience a serious dental emergency. It’s important, however, to know what to do in such a situation. Here is a quiz on dental emergencies and less urgent oral issues.

1. One of the wires on your braces breaks. What do you do?

a. Cut off the loose piece.
b. Put a piece of orthodontic wax on the end if it is irritating your tongue or gums. Schedule an appointment with your orthodontist to have it fixed.
c. If the wire has cut your gums, rinse with a solution of salt and water.

Both b and c are correct. If you don’t have a piece of orthodontic wax, you can use a cotton ball to cover the sharp end. If you cut off the loose end of the wire, you risk swallowing it.

2. Your five year-old falls off his bike, hits his face on the sidewalk, and knocks out one of his front teeth. What do you do before driving immediately to the nearest Boulder County dental office or Boulder ER?

a. Put the tooth back in the socket.
b. If the tooth is dirty, scrub it with a brush.
c. Put the tooth in milk.

The answer depends on whether it is a permanent tooth or a baby tooth. If a permanent tooth is knocked out, it may be successfully re-implanted if done quickly. Make sure you only hold the tooth by the crown, never touch the root. If the tooth is dirty, rinse it gently with water being cautious not to brush off any tissue attached. It is best to reinsert the tooth into the socket. This may not be possible with younger children. Because it is essential to keep the tooth from drying out on your way to your Boulder County dentist or nearest Boulder area emergency room, you can put the tooth in a cup of milk. Baby teeth should not be reinserted because it can potentially damage the emerging tooth.

3. You lose a filling and the tooth starts hurting. After
scheduling an appointment with your Lafayette  dentist, what do you do in the meantime?

a. Save the filling.
b. Take an OTC pain reliever.
c. Put an aspirin on the tooth.

Both a and b are correct. Though your Lafayette dentist probably can’t use the same filling to repair the problem, it may reveal important information about the cause of the separation. Never put an aspirin on a tooth because the acid in it could irritate your gums.

4. One of your teeth suddenly darkens. What are the possible causes?

a. The nerve inside the tooth is damaged.
b. It is side effect of a medication you are taking.
c. Gum disease.
d. An infection.

The answer is all of the above.

What Does Your Boulder Dentist Need To Know?

For optimal dental health, all Boulder County, Louisville, and Broomfield residents should be visiting their dentist twice a year for routine cleanings and exams. This is a good time to make sure that you are brushing and flossing properly. It is also important that you discuss issues related to dental health.

Make sure to tell your Lafayette dentist about any medications that you are taking. If you are using any tobacco products, you should inform your dentist. Your dentist might be able to offer you a program that can help you stop. Let your dentist know if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. If you have any type of eating disorder, you should also discuss this with your dentist. Ditto if you have a special health issue such as a heart condition. Oral health is an integral part of your overall physical health and cannot be isolated.

Your regular check up is also the perfect opportunity to inquire about Boulder County cosmetic dentistry procedures. Boulder Dentists Know When A Simple Problem Can Become Serious

Today in the Boulder family dentist blog we are going to discuss those small irritations in the mouth that can have the potential of becoming big problems.

Injuries, sores, or inflammation in the mouth can be very uncomfortable. These non-specific irritations, called stomatitis, have many different causes. They may be cause by cold sores, gum disease, or biting the inside of your mouth. They may also be cause by the irritation that results from broken teeth or braces.

In fact, any inflammation of the membranes in the mouth can be classified as stomatitis. Stomatitis can affect a person’s ability to speak, eat, and even to fall asleep at night. These pests can really have an impact on the lives of Boulder and Lafayette, CO residents!

The good news is that most of these irritations clear up on their own in less than two weeks. However, there is a possibility that a viral or bacterial infection can occur, so it’s important to let your Boulder dentist know about these sores. Even if there are no complications, your dentist can help you treat the symptoms of stomatitis with pain relievers and at-home remedies such as salt water rinses.

Hi, my name is Dr. Gordon West. I take care of patients in the Boulder area at my comfortable and friendly dental office. I want my patients to have the best oral health possible. I also want them to look their best, so if you have any questions about a smile makeover, give us a call at 720-862-3630.

Common cosmetic dentistry procedures used in smile makeovers include teeth whitening, gum contouring, veneers, dental bonding, and dental implants.

We hope to see you in our Lafayette office soon!

“An Air-dried Toothbrush Is A Healthy Toothbrush, Boulder”

Boulder Cosmetic Dentistry Office Accepting Patients

Today in our Lafayette dental blog we will highlight some of the simple things you can do with your toothbrush to keep your mouth as clean and healthy as possible.

One of the most important habits Boulder residents can form is to always allow their toothbrush to completely air dry between uses. The best way to let the toothbrush air dry is by placing it in a toothbrush holder on the counter with the bristles pointing up. This method of storage is much better than sticking it away in a drawer since it’s unlikely to dry there.

Also, when you travel away from the Boulder, Boulder County, or Lafayette, CO area, make sure your toothbrush is dry before you seal it away in a travel container.

A good strategy for Lafayette residents to make sure their toothbrush has ample time to dry is to buy two toothbrushes at your Boulder drugstore. Then alternate between the two so each has time to fully dry out between uses.

And Boulder dental patients should remember to replace their toothbrush (or toothbrushes) every 3-4 months, or after they’ve had a cold!

Hi. I’m Dr. Gordon West, a general and cosmetic dentist in Lafayette, and I want my patients to have the best oral health possible. At Gordon West DDS, Cosmetic & General Dentistry we offer the following services:

porcelain veneers
dental implants
prepless veneers
dental crowns

We are currently accepting new Boulder patients and the state-of-the-art dental care in a comfortable environment. Our staff here would be happy to answer any questions you have about teeth whitening, veneers, bonding, or other cosmetic dentistry procedures.
