Bone Loss and Dental Implants

A successful dental implant is virtually undetectable in both its appearance and function, and we have placed a lot of them at Boulder County Smiles in Lafayette.

Most people who are missing one or more teeth are viable candidates for implants. But there are a few requirements, and one of the most important is that you must have enough adequate bone in your jaw.

Bone Grafting

Having enough adequate bone is essential because a dental implant is anchored to the jaw. That’s what makes them so strong. But a consequence of losing a tooth and its root is that the bone in the surrounding area begins to atrophy.

Even if that has happened, though, there is a solution. Bone grafting promotes new bone growth, enough so that an implant can be supported. The procedure involes taking a section of bone from another part of the body and grafting it on the jaw bone.

Afterward, it usually takes a few months for the bone to be strong enough to support the implant, But once it is, the implant procedure can move forward.

At Boulder County Smiles in Lafayette we’ve placed single dental implants and implant-supported dentures in patients from Boulder, Louisville, and Broomfield. Please call our office to schedule an appointment today!
