How To Prepare for A Dental Implant Procedure

Obtaining dental implants involves surgery or, in some cases, multiple procedures over several months. If you are ready to get dental implants, prepare your body for oral surgery and help your mouth to heal afterward. Proper preparation will also increase the chances of success of your dental implant, allowing you to enjoy a wonderful smile for many years. At Cary Family Dental, we have performed many dental implants, and are proud that we have such a high success rate.

GET A DENTAL EXAMINATION

The first step in preparing for a dental procedure is to have your dentist check that you are a suitable candidate. Your dentist may include a visual inspection of your mouth, X-rays, and an assessment of your medical records. Based on this information, your dentist will schedule dental implant procedures and ensure that you make a special assessment based on your medical condition. They will discuss your plan with you so that you know what to expect at every step. This is also a good time to find out if you have a dental plan that includes implants.

TAKE YOUR MEDICATIONS

If you have a chronic illness or other health problem, your dentist may prescribe antibiotics. It acts as a replacement immune system and helps prevent premature implant failure. Your dentist may also rinse your mouth with an antibacterial mouthwash to prevent bacteria from entering the surgical site.

PREPARE YOUR JAW

If your jawbone is thin or soft or you have been missing a tooth for a long time, your jawbone is not strong enough to support the implant, so a bone graft may be needed. The bone grafting material can be a synthetic material like any other part of your body. It restores the affected part of your jawbone for more strength, which is necessary due to the grip strength. A strong jaw can better support your implant and prevent failure.

After a bone graft, you may need to wait several months for the implant to work for the bone to grow strongly. If you need a small bone graft, it can be done on the day of implant surgery. The condition of your jaw will determine which option you need.

WATCH WHAT YOU EAT

Have a good, light diet before the operation. If you have intravenous sedation, do not eat after midnight before surgery to keep your stomach empty.

MAKE POST-OP PREPARATIONS

Rest is essential for recovery. Before the operation, make a few plans to make it easier for you, including:

  • Lightening up your schedule for one week.
  • Asking for help around the house or watching your children for two days.
  • Buying soft and cold foods and pain medication.
  • Taking two days off work and social plans.
  • Stopping exercise.

If you need IV sedation, arrange for transportation home as you will be unable to drive.
